RicanTalks: Daily Wire+: “BreakAways”

OP-ED

The Daily Wire, one of the leading podcast platforms, has been very busy creating an alternative to mainstream media, curating a vast array of content from News, Sports, Movies, and now a show called BreakAways. The show is hosted by a sports journalist that lost her job because her religious accommodation request was denied. Ben Shapiro, once again (he had also reached out to Gina Carano), reached out and asked Williams if she would work for the DailyWire+; they weren’t sure how this collaboration would work out nor what content would be produced by this duo. Allison Williams’ first action was to pen her first op-ed article; I highly encourage you to read it yourself.

Williams, who had worked for ESPN, wanted to continue to tell stories via the sports angle, so “BreakAways” was born. The series is eight episodes long, with the first four episodes released and ready for binge-watching. The episodes are about thirty minutes long and feature interviews with Enes Kanter Freedom, Nick Rolovich, Jonathan Isaac, and UFC President Dana White.

We all faced the fear of termination during what I deemed unconstitutional vaccine mandates; when I was living in Washington State, I had a good notion of what happened to Nick Rolovich. He was the head football coach of Washington State University. Mr. Rolovich had asked for a religious exemption/accommodation, which was denied, and the program released a state employee. In this episode, he tells his story, and Williams does a masterful job in her interview style, allowing for a nice cohesive flow of conversation.

All episodes are well produced; my favorite episode to date is titled “Dana White: UFC Won’t Back Down.” In this episode, Dana talks about the controversies the UFC faced while trying to remain operational during the pandemic. Mr. White also spoke about how the same media that thrived covering the UFC began to condemn him for wanting to keep the sport going. He talked about the American spirit and what it takes to make your dreams come true.

DailyWire+ Breakaways

Overall, I enjoyed all the episodes and seeing the other side of the story was refreshing.
